Now
The first public library started in 1927 when Judge George Underwood donated 57 books to help start a library for the Village of Saugatuck. In 1965 a district library was created to serve Saugatuck Township, and the Villages of Saugatuck and Douglas. Myrtle Bird received statewide recognition for transforming the library board from a committee of the city to a governing a decision making body into a district library. She was awarded the ¨1973 Citation of Merit Trustee Division¨ from the Michigan Library Association. |
Then
By the time of the Civil War a building was built for a place of worship in Douglas, and is now the Douglas District Library. The church was built because Douglas needed a church. In about 1910 there was a fire on the roof that damaged the bell tower, and the upper part has been removed. There have been several changes to the church. When the library moved in, including adding an elevator. There is also a solar heating system that uses the sun’s light/heat to heat the building. It was about the first solar powered building in the area. The original owner is the Douglas Methodist Church because they took the building when no one needed it nor used it. |
